An Old Midlish Rhyme
The wind from the North sings of heroes of Olde
The wind from the East makes our blood run Cold
The wind from the South smells of Spices and Gold
But the wind from the West tells of warriors Bold.

AWAKE! AWAKE! FOES FIRE DANGER! AWAKE!

Forewarned by alarm beacons, the border post at the North Ford was on alert with barricades in place across the ford and guards and patrols doubled. As the sun rose, barbarians could be seen approaching from the West and the trumpet rang out to summon the garrison to their posts.

All eyes were rivetted to the ford and the foe beyond. Not a man spared a thought for the edge of the Wild Wood behind them.

As stealthy as cats, the Huntress and Cuan na Banrigh had scaled the tower, hidden in a magic mist, retrieved the sacred chest, and sped through the hills and forests towards the ford. Birds carried the word to the waiting Men of the Hills.

"We are coming!"

  1. Great pics again , what lovely figures. The horn blower is particularly noteworthy. It all makes one rush breathless towards the os 25s and set up a game...

    1. The hornblower is a Ral Partha Hyborian Gunderman command group figure (see the Lost Minis Wiki http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Image:Rp-H144.jpg) . I do sometimes wonder what normal people store in the parts of their brain used for instantaneous recognition of vintage miniatures by mine. :P. Looks like the standard bearer on the tower is from the same group, and the fellow by the bolt thrower is one of the pikemen, without his pike.

    2. Got it in one. One of my first 40 man units back in the 70's. At the time I wasn't happy that the officer was a head shorter than everyone else. Now I wonder why it bothered me. I was probably still sensitive to and tired of short people jokes. Anyway, apart from a few rear rankers, they've been on the reserve list for a decade, to be kept for eventual touch up, re arming, rebaseing, etc once I find and assign a place in the backstory.

  4. Great pics! Combines that Prince Valiant sort of feel with the toy soldier aesthetic.

    1. eh? hmm Yes, could be, hadn't thought about it but that would pretty much sum up my approach. Maybe with a touch of old movies?

    2. Oh, yes, old movies. I'd say my own inspiration comes more from old movies than from real history. It's all good though. :)
